MonaLisa Touch vs. Estrogen Cream for Treating Dryness

The latest research for the MonaLisa Touch is the Velvet Study. This study compared the effects of the MonaLisa Touch laser to standard estrogen cream therapy for a 6-month period.

The Velvet Study Summary

I have been treating women for more than 4 years with the MonaLisa Touch laser to resolve menopause symptoms. Symptoms include:

  • feminine dryness
  • pain with intimacy
  • recurrent UTI’s

I chose the MonaLisa Touch based on the years in use, scientific research and the 30+ peer reviewed studies. Results from the MonaLisa Touch have been consistent with the studies. More importantly, patients have said the treatment is “life changing” and are recommending it to family and friends.

There are many treatments that “claim” to resolve the symptoms of menopause without scientific proof or peer reviewed studies. All treatments we provide are backed by Science.

The latest research for the MonaLisa Touch is the Velvet Study. This study compared the effects of the MonaLisa Touch laser to standard estrogen cream therapy for a 6-month period. The teams at 6 different centers assessed both objective and subjective factors such as vaginal dryness score, which was the primary outcome.

Other measures assessed were questionnaires dealing with sexual function and urinary symptoms. The study was designed to look at “non-inferiority”. That means it was designed to prove that the laser treatment was the same as the estrogen therapy for the assessed measurements. 58 women were assessed. The study showed that both treatments resulted in the same degree of satisfaction and success in treating dryness.

The advantage to the MonaLisa Touch over estrogen therapy is the convenience of annual touch ups instead of needing to remember twice weekly application. Also, women who have contraindications for hormone therapy can be treated with the laser without any concerns. Now, we know that the laser treatment is non-inferior to low dose estrogen therapy.
